What drives the price
The machine class and size, the attachments (breaker, bucket, grab), operator-supplied versus self-drive, fuel rules, and the distance for delivery and collection. A smaller machine on a short job is often the better-value choice.
Day rates versus week rates
Hire is usually charged per day or per week, and the longer you hire the lower the effective daily cost. For anything past a few days, ask for the weekly rate before you book.
What is usually included — and what is not
Breakdown cover and basic insurance are common inclusions. Delivery, fuel, damage and out-of-hours use are often charged separately. Ask explicitly what a damaged or late-returned machine costs.
What to check before you compare
Confirm the operators hold the right cards (for example CPCS or NPORS) and that insurance covers your site. Check what happens if the machine breaks down mid-hire, and who pays for the lost time.
